How do I apply? All applications are made using our online application system. An account needs to be created and then you can apply. All correspondence will be sent to your email address. iQ applications should be made directly.When can I apply? All first year undergraduate and postgraduate students are guaranteed a place in university accommodation provided you meet the following criteria :
1) You receive an unconditional offer of studyby 1 September 2009
2) You apply using our online booking system
by 1 September 2009
If your offer to study is determined by your exam results you can still apply for accommodation and once your exam results and acceptance at the University are confirmed, your accommodation application will be processed. You can still apply now for accommodation even if you do not meet the above criteria and we will do our very best to make you an offer of accommodation. No payment is required until you have accepted an offer of accommodation.
Do you have ensuite rooms? Yes, ensuite rooms are available at Constantine Court and iQ Student Quarter.
Do I need to pay a deposit ? A damage deposit of £200 is payable only when you accept an offer of accommodation. This deposit will be returned to you within four weeks after the contract end date provided there is no damage to the bedroom or communal areas. You do not need to pay any money when you apply.
When do I need to pay my first term’s rent? Unless you have opted to pay in full on arrival, your first term’s rent does not need to be paid until 25th October which will allow plenty of time for your student loan to be processed. When you collect your keys you will need to show a form of identification but will not need to make a rent payment.
How do I pay my rent? Unless you have opted to pay in full at the start of your contract period you will be required to set up a direct debit. If you have a 40 week contract you will pay in three instalments. If you have a 50/52 week contract you will pay in four instalments. Nursing students can pay every month to coincide with their bursaries.
Do I have to pay any other utility bills? Your heating, water and electric costs are included in the rent. The only other cost is the phone in the bedroom – which operates on a pay as you go system and is completely optional.
Can I bring my car? You can bring your car and it is free to park at Castle Irwell, John Lester, Eddie Colman, Matthias and Bramall Courts. However as parking on campus is extremely limited you will need to pay for a permit to use the University car parks if you want to park there during the day. A free bus service runs from all the accommodation sites to the main campus throughout term time every half hour.
What is provided in my bedroom? A bed, wardrobe, desk, chair and bin are included, plus a data cable for your internet access.
What is provided in the kitchen? A fridge and freezer, an electric oven and hob, a microwave and a bin. All kitchens have either; tables and chairs, tables and stools, benches and stools or breakfast bars and stools.
Are any other items provided in the accommodation? Each flat or house includes an ironing board, dustpan and brush and mop and bucket. Castle Irwell houses and flats are all provided with a hoover.
What other essentials should I bring with me ?
• A duvet, single or fitted sheet, towels and pillowcases (or you can buy a bedding pack)
• A couple of plates, bowls, mugs, glasses and cutlery
• A desk or bedside light
• A small mirror for your bedroom
• Tea-towels, toilet rolls, tin opener and corkscrew
• Kettle and toaster (it may be worth waiting until you move in as someone else may have brought them)
Is internet access available in my bedroom? Yes unlimited internet access linked to the University network is included in the cost of your rent.
What sporting facilities are available on campus? The Tom Husband Leisure Centre is based on campus and membership is included for all students living in our accommodation (including iQ Student Quarter). There is a nominal £5 administration fee to activate your membership.
Laundry Facilities - Coin operated laundry facilities are available at all of the accommodation choices.
Cleaning - A weekly cleaning service is provided at all University owned and managed accommodation sites. This means the bathroom and kitchen and other communal areas will be cleaned weekly but students are responsible for their own bedrooms. The ensuite facilities in Constantine Court are also included in the weekly clean. Hoovers can be borrowed from each site reception.
Television Licence - If you are bringing a TV you’ll need a TV licence. A colour licence costs £142.50 for further information visit the TV licensing website or call 0870 241 5973.
Insurance - Contents insurance (upto £3500) is included in your rent for your possessions in your flat or house. Supplements are possible for high value items or items (such as laptops) that are used outside of the house or flat.
What if I have additional accommodation requirements? All accommodation is equipped with the Deaf Alerter system for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Rooms are available for students who are wheelchair users at iQ Student Quarter, Constantine Court, John Lester and Eddie Colman Court. Family accommodation is available at Matthias Court. If you have any other requirements please advise us on your application form.
